Carolyn Prudence Alexander Howard passed away peacefully on January 21, 2024, at the age of 88 after a long illness. She was the widow of Dr. Marvin Perry Howard, Jr. of Savannah.

Carolyn was born on June 7, 1935, in Murphy, NC to Robert Glen Alexander and Gladys Welborn Alexander. She was the youngest of 5 children and had 4 older brothers. She graduated from Murphy High School with honors in swimming, diving, voice, and mathematics.

Carolyn enrolled at Agnes Scott College. One of her most memorable moments there was attending a speech by her favorite poet, Robert Frost.

She then transferred to the University of Georgia, where she joined Tri Delta sorority. She graduated in 1957. The speaker at her graduation was John F. Kennedy. But it was at UGA in a physics lab her senior year where she met her future husband, Perry Howard.

Perry and Carolyn were married on July 14th, 1957, and moved to Decatur, GA where Perry entered Emory Dental school. Carolyn taught mathematics at Southwest DeKalb High School.

After Perry’s graduation from dental school in 1961, the couple moved to Perry’s hometown of Savannah. Carolyn’s focus became raising a family, supporting her husband’s dental practice, and becoming actively involved in the community. They loved playing bridge and tennis at The Savannah Yacht Club. The family loved traveling and attending sporting events together.

Carolyn took an active role in her children’s lives.  She never missed a school function or a sporting event. She was known to open her home to anyone that was going through a difficult time. Carolyn had a strong faith, and she truly had a servant’s heart.

They attended Wesley Monumental Methodist Church, where Carolyn sang in the church choir. She was a member of the Huntington Women’s Club, serving as President, and was proud of the over 3000 service hours their members donated each year to the community, and the many college scholarships they awarded to worthy local students.

After Perry passed away in 1994, Carolyn continued serving as a volunteer, singing in the choir at Isle of Hope Methodist, and traveling. But she always put her family first and made every family gathering special with meticulous planning, incredible food, and her gift of hospitality.

Carolyn was affectionately known as “Bucky” to her family. It was a nickname that originated from an 18-month-old grandchild at a family gathering years ago. The name stuck, and she loved it.

She cherished the many friends she had in Savannah and looked forward to seeing the women of the “First Wednesday Group” at their gatherings each month.

Carolyn is survived by her son, Mark Howard (Deanne), daughter Heather Tassier (Steve), and her four grandchildren, Haley Howard, Ross Howard, Griffin Tassier, Stephen Tassier, and many nieces and nephews.

We are all grateful and blessed for her incredible life and the legacy she leaves behind.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the Oaks at Habersham, Riverview, Candler Hospital, and Hospice Savannah. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation in her memory be made to the Alzheimer’s association or Hospice Savannah. Services will be private.
